The 10 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb is one of the most scenic, rewarding, and highly recommended ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters above sea level. Operated by Kibo Trips African Safaris, based in Arusha, Tanzania, this carefully designed itinerary includes 8 days of hiking on the mountain, giving climbers excellent time for acclimatization, steady altitude adjustment, and a more enjoyable trekking experience.
The Lemosho Route begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a quieter and more remote start compared to some of the busier routes. This makes it ideal for travelers who want a more peaceful wilderness experience before joining other trails higher on the mountain. The route is famous for its beautiful rainforest, open moorland, dramatic Shira Plateau, panoramic mountain views, and excellent acclimatization profile.
This itinerary is especially recommended for climbers who want a strong balance of scenery, comfort, safety, and summit success. The extra acclimatization time allows the body to adjust gradually to higher elevations, reducing the risk of altitude-related challenges and increasing the chances of reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent.
Throughout the journey, climbers pass through several distinct ecological zones. The trek begins in lush montane rainforest, where ancient trees, mosses, birds, and possible monkey sightings create a rich natural introduction to the mountain. The trail then opens into heath and moorland, where giant lobelias, giant groundsels, volcanic ridges, and wide views begin to dominate the landscape. Higher up, trekkers cross alpine desert terrain, a dramatic and open environment shaped by altitude, wind, and volcanic history. Finally, the summit attempt takes climbers into the Arctic zone, where glaciers, frozen slopes, and sunrise views create one of the most unforgettable moments in African adventure travel.
Major highlights of the Lemosho Route include Lemosho Gate, Mti Mkubwa Camp, Shira Plateau, Shira 1 Camp, Shira 2 Camp, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, Barranco Wall, Karanga Camp, Barafu Camp, Stella Point, and Uhuru Peak. Each location adds a different layer to the climb, from forest exploration and volcanic landscapes to high-altitude endurance and summit achievement.
For travelers searching for the best Kilimanjaro route, Lemosho Route itinerary, 8 days Kilimanjaro trekking, 10 days Kilimanjaro climb, Mount Kilimanjaro guided climb, Tanzania mountain trekking, and Kilimanjaro summit packages from Arusha, this itinerary is structured to answer the most important questions clearly and naturally. It is written for travelers who want accurate details about distance, hiking time, elevation, camp locations, daily activities, route experience, and what to expect on each stage of the climb.
This Lemosho Route expedition is suitable for adventurous travelers, solo climbers, couples, groups, photographers, charity climbers, corporate teams, and anyone looking for a scenic and well-paced Kilimanjaro climbing experience. While no technical climbing skills are required, good physical fitness, mental determination, proper preparation, and professional guiding support are essential.
With experienced mountain guides, a dedicated support crew, careful safety procedures, daily health monitoring, and strong local knowledge, Kibo Trips African Safaris provides a professional and memorable Kilimanjaro climbing experience from arrival to departure. This journey is more than a trek. It is a personal achievement, a connection with Tanzania’s mountain wilderness, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stand on the Roof of Africa.

Elevation: Approximately 890 meters
Travel Time: Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative from Kibo Trips African Safaris and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. After hotel check-in, you will have time to rest after your journey before meeting your mountain guide for a detailed climb briefing. During this session, your guide will explain the Lemosho Route, daily hiking expectations, altitude safety, packing requirements, health checks, and mountain procedures. Your gear will also be inspected to ensure you have the proper clothing, footwear, sleeping bag, and personal trekking equipment needed for the climb.

The drive passes through local villages, fertile farmland, forested areas, and scenic countryside before arriving at the park entrance for registration. After completing official park procedures, the trek begins through the beautiful montane rainforest. This section is peaceful, shaded, and rich in biodiversity, making it one of the most enjoyable introductions to Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually ascends through tall trees, moss-covered branches, thick vegetation, and natural forest sounds. Wildlife sightings may include blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, forest birds, and small mammals. The day ends at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, a quiet campsite surrounded by dense forest.

DAY 3: MTI MKUBWA CAMP TO SHIRA 1 CAMP
Location: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Starting Elevation: Approximately 2,650 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,610 meters
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 kilometers

After breakfast at Mti Mkubwa Camp, the trail leaves the dense rainforest and gradually enters the heath and moorland zone. This is the day when the landscape begins to change dramatically, revealing wider views of the mountain and the surrounding wilderness. The path climbs steadily through heather vegetation, volcanic ridges, and open terrain as you approach the famous Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most important geological features. The Shira Plateau was once a separate volcanic cone and is now a vast high-altitude landscape filled with dramatic scenery. As you gain elevation, you may begin to feel the effects of altitude, so your guide will encourage a slow and steady pace. The day ends at Shira 1 Camp, where climbers enjoy open views, cooler temperatures, and a true sense of being high on the mountain.

DAY 4: SHIRA 1 CAMP TO SHIRA 2 CAMP
Location: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Starting Elevation: Approximately 3,610 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,850 meters
Hiking Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers
Hiking Time: Approximately 3 to 5 hours
Today’s trek crosses the wide and beautiful Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic sections of the Lemosho Route. The hiking is generally moderate, allowing climbers to enjoy the open landscapes while continuing gradual acclimatization. The trail offers spectacular views of Kibo Peak, the main summit cone of Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as views across the western slopes of the mountain. The terrain is open and windswept, with volcanic rocks, high-altitude plants, and distant mountain scenery creating a dramatic wilderness atmosphere. This day is important because it allows your body more time to adjust before reaching higher elevations. The trek ends at Shira 2 Camp, a scenic campsite offering impressive views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes and, on clear days, Mount Meru in the distance.

Optional Activities
DAY 5: SHIRA 2 CAMP TO LAVA TOWER AND BARRANCO CAMP
Location: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Starting Elevation: Approximately 3,850 meters
Highest Elevation: Approximately 4,630 meters at Lava Tower
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,960 meters at Barranco Camp
Hiking Distance: Approximately 10 kilometers
Hiking Time: Approximately 6 to 8 hours
This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Lemosho Route because it follows the highly effective climb high and sleep low principle. After breakfast, the trail ascends gradually through alpine desert terrain toward Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation standing at approximately 4,630 meters. Reaching this altitude gives your body valuable exposure to thinner air, helping improve acclimatization before descending to a lower sleeping elevation. The landscape becomes more rugged and open, with fewer plants and wide views across the mountain. After spending time near Lava Tower, the trail descends into the beautiful Barranco Valley, a dramatic area surrounded by cliffs, giant groundsels, and impressive mountain scenery. The day ends at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Mount Kilimanjaro, located below the famous Barranco Wall.

DAY 6: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
Location: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Starting Elevation: Approximately 3,960 meters
Highest Elevation: Approximately 4,200 meters around Barranco Wall
Ending Elevation: Approximately 4,035 meters
Hiking Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
Hiking Time: Approximately 4 to 5 hours
After breakfast at Barranco Camp, your day begins with one of the most famous and exciting sections of the Lemosho Route, the Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks steep and challenging from camp, it is a non-technical scramble that does not require climbing equipment. Your guide will lead you slowly and carefully through the rocky trail as you ascend step by step, enjoying incredible views over Barranco Valley, Mount Meru, and Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes. This section is often one of the most memorable parts of the entire climb because it combines adventure, scenery, and a great sense of achievement. After reaching the top of the wall, the trail continues across ridges and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley, then climbing again to reach Karanga Camp. This day is shorter than previous trekking days, giving your body valuable time to adjust before moving higher toward summit base camp.

Optional Activities
DAY 7: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
Location: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Starting Elevation: Approximately 4,035 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 4,673 meters
Hiking Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers
Hiking Time: Approximately 3 to 5 hours
After breakfast, you will leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The trail passes through alpine desert terrain, where vegetation becomes very limited and the landscape is dominated by volcanic rocks, dry slopes, and open mountain views. Although the hiking distance is not long, the altitude makes this section feel more demanding, so your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you will have lunch, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit climb. Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, and the name reflects the cold and exposed conditions experienced at this altitude. In the afternoon, your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing, check your clothing layers, headlamp, gloves, water bottles, snacks, and other summit essentials. You will then have an early dinner and try to sleep before waking around midnight for the most important stage of the expedition.

Summit Elevation: 5,895 meters at Uhuru Peak
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,950 meters at Millennium Camp
Hiking Distance: Approximately 13 to 15 kilometers
Hiking Time: Approximately 10 to 14 hours
Shortly after midnight, your summit attempt begins. This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the entire Kilimanjaro climb. Under the night sky, you will ascend slowly from Barafu Camp toward Stella Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 meters. The trail is steep, cold, and physically demanding, requiring patience, determination, and a steady pace. Your guides will support you throughout the climb, monitoring your condition and encouraging you as you move higher into the Arctic zone. Reaching Stella Point is a major achievement, and from there the trail continues along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters above sea level. Arriving at Uhuru Peak around sunrise is an unforgettable moment, with views of glaciers, volcanic formations, and the vast landscapes of Tanzania stretching below. After photographs and celebration at the summit, you will begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp, where you will spend the night at a lower and more comfortable altitude.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 12 kilometers
Hiking Time: Approximately 4 to 5 hours
After breakfast at Millennium Camp, you will begin the final descent through moorland and rainforest zones toward Mweka Gate. As you lose elevation, the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen, making the descent more comfortable after the intensity of summit day. The trail passes through beautiful forest where you may hear birds, see lush vegetation, and possibly encounter monkeys along the way. This final section gives climbers time to reflect on the incredible journey from the western rainforest to the summit of Africa. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will complete check-out procedures and receive your official Kilimanjaro certificate. Climbers who reached Stella Point receive a green certificate, while climbers who reached Uhuru Peak receive a gold certificate.
